There is some barrel distortion at 24mm and some pincushion distortion when fully zoomed out. But both of these are easily corrected in post-processing software such as Lightroom or Photoshop.
The focus ring is smooth and there are always two rings so you don’t have to worry about losing your place while focusing manually if you decide to use autofocus instead of manual focus later on in an event or shoot.
The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens is the replacement for the very popular Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens and improves upon its predecessor in every way. This lens update is all about image quality with improved AF performance thrown in for good measure.
The new Canon 100-400 II has a new top-notch fluorite element that contributes to a reduction in size, weight, and chromatic aberration, but most of the changes are internal with improved coatings and weather sealing being the biggest noticeable changes from an external perspective.
Internally, this lens uses one Fluorite element and one Super UD element to reduce chromatic aberrations to achieve excellent image sharpness and clarity. The lens has a nine-blade circular aperture diaphragm that provides beautiful, soft backgrounds and it has a minimum focusing distance of 3.2 ft./0.98m across the entire zoom range (which results in a maximum magnification ratio of 0.31x).

It’s well built and comes with a lens hood and case. The lens is not sealed against dust or moisture though so it will not fare well in wet conditions. The focusing motor is near silent and smooth, making this ideal for video recording if your camera provides continuous AF mode during video recording (not the case on any Canon DSLR).
The IS system provides 2 to 3 stops of extra stability, which can be particularly useful when shooting at longer focal lengths.
It performs well in good light, but as you stop down towards F8 it gets soft in the corners until about F11 when everything is sharp again. Chromatic aberration is low (the blue and purple fringing that can occur around high contrast subjects) and there’s no vignetting (darkening of the corners). The bokeh (out of focus areas) looks good too, with a very smooth-looking background blur at wide apertures.
