Chromatic aberrations are almost non-existent and vignetting as well as distortion are very well controlled.
The lens’ build quality is better than average with a metal mount and high-quality plastics used on the barrel. The zoom ring is smooth but the focus ring is a bit stiff which makes fine manual adjustments difficult. Thanks to its USD motor it focuses quickly and quietly allowing it to be used for video applications.
When mounted on an APS-C body, its equivalent focal length of 105-450mm makes it a great option for wildlife shooting as long as you’re willing to accept its slower maximum aperture of f/5.6 when used at 300mm. The Fuji 50-230mm is a surprisingly good lens for the price. It’s quite sharp, very fast and quiet focusing, and has a nice color rendition. The optical image stabilization is superb – you can take sharp photos at 1/5 of a second, which is kind of amazing.
It’s the only thing that comes close to the IS on my Olympus XZ-1 camera. I love the size and weight of this lens – it’s tiny compared to similar lenses from other brands! I’m also impressed with how close you can get to macro photography with this lens – you can get as close as 1.1 feet away from your subject, which is great for taking pictures of flowers or insects or anything else that’s small.
The only downside to this lens is the lack of a manual focus ring – you have to switch over to MF mode on the camera to manual focus. Not a big deal, but it would be nice if there was a switch on the barrel like on most other lenses so that you could quickly go from autofocus to manual focus without having to take your eye off the viewfinder or spend time switching modes on the camera.

This lens will provide a bit different framing with your APS-C format DSLR than the popular Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III Lens, but both lenses are excellent choices for this focal length range and price range.
A compact and lightweight build make the 55-250 IS STM Lens an easy lens to carry and a great travel companion. This lens balances nicely on most Canon EOS DSLRs, including the Rebel series cameras where it becomes an 87-400mm equivalent.
